Tales In A Daydream [ACT 1 Scene I and II]

Down a silent street. Amberlina and Elena take a stroll in the streets of Venus in the late evening where there is serenity and divine silence. Birds chirping, branches of willows swaying, tulips dancing to the wind’s tune and a cool breeze accompanying them.

Amberlina: Gosh! What a home I have with treasures of life and wealth but without a companion.

Elena: Thrust not yourself! Heaven is behind the one with a white heart; a heart without boundaries. Have a little more patience, Amber. Time and perfection work together. Ain’t you a beauty? You’re full of splendor and energy. Be patient.

Amberlina: You know not thrust. My speech shows of no thrust. It’s of anxiety and despair. Bear with me friend. I do not intend to stab myself to death! But I am not fulfilled, Elena. I’m single and tired of this lovelorn nature. It’s boring! I loathe my very life, Elena.

Elena: Make not your reputation as despicable, but rather a symbolism of true respect.

Amberlina: Roger!

Elena: It is my duty as a true friend to guide your path when you are on the verge of diverting. Besides, your conscience is behind all your actions. I wonder who injects these false ideas into that head of yours. As a matter of fact you’re inexperienced. You barely know what it takes to prepare for such a lifetime commitment. Hold on, Amber. Hold on.

Amberlina: But this fact is of no proof. A lady without a man; it’s like living without a soul. I am compelled to do evil.

Elena: What kind of evil? Do not step on your own toes. A wise man once said,

‘Conscience is sometimes the devil
That compels one to do evil
T’is sometimes the thief of the mind
And can make one go blind
to the easy way out
and to all that’s going about’
Be vigilant, Amber. When your conscience is wrong that’s when you begin to see things wrongly and you’re blinded to the truth. Just as the wise man said in his piece.

Amberlina: Understood, philosopher Elena. I’ll surely consider these words. But I am of age. Spy the world around you, Elena. Tell me, what do you sense?

Elena: What?

Amberlina: Even nightingales sing in pairs on the trees, the roses blossom scent the air. Everywhere becomes pleasant and love brews. He holds me so tight and cuddles me and I feel his warmth. We talk and dine and roses rain while the birds sing. And we dance all night and his linen cloth smells of pure lavender. He’s so close that I don’t wanna let go ‘cause I can feel the wonderful natural love thing within me but it’s just imagination… Oh! Daydreaming! Then after I come back to my senses I realize I’m all alone. I wake up too perturbed and perplexed.

Elena: Enough Amber! You’re thinking too deep! Watch your step Amber. Aha! And save your words. At this young age? Just eighteen?

Amberlina: You want me to pass age??

[Elena flares up]

Elena: You want me to take this? I’ve had enough ‘Lina. Go think of it. All I’ve said.

SCENE II [Amberlina’s Residence] Enter Amberlina and Elena. Marline sits at the dining table reading a map.

Marline: Hola! [hugs Amber] Missed you! What did you get for me?

Amberlina: Something special. [smirks]

Marline: What’s that little thing for your little Marline? [smiles tenderly]

Amberlina: A gift [pauses] called empty hands. I’m so sorry Marly.

Marline: That’s fine. [saddened]

Amberlina: Where’s Mama?

Marline: Out! [stomps out]

[Elena And Amberlina both stare at each other in surprise as Marline moves out]

[Enter Lady Blanche and Valentine] Lady Blanche is dressed in a sparkling golden gown with her cheeks blushed and lips glossy and red as scarlet. In her left hand is a fan and a porch purse. She walks on stage majestically, arm-in-arm with Valentine, her husband.

Lady Blanche: Heloo! [gasps in surprise]

Amberlina: Maman!! [exchanges hugs and kisses]

Lady Blanche: My Cupid! [coddling Amberlina] You look like the Queen of the stars and gold in the bright morning sky. [kisses Amber’s forehead]

Valentine: A lot of pampering, Woman! [wears a frown]

Blanche: Hey, Old man! Would you shut your tiny beak?? Quiet, shh!

Valentine: Shh! [to her] Birds of a kind huh? I’m outta here! [stomps out furiously]

Blanche: Come on Babe, let’s go and get you something to eat. How are you Elena?

Elena: I’m good, Lady Blanche. How are you? [sounding brittle and croaky]

Blanche: Ho! I am greatly fit, enthusiastic and kicking! We thank God for our lives. Gone are the days when humanity was clothed in sackcloth and smeared with sheen shea. In the present, we all are trying to make ends meet; fashionable and smart. The olden way of life is abolished. By eighteen and you’re already a yummy mummy. Be wise, girls.

Elena: Thanks Blanche but I think inexperience could lead to one’s downfall. How can we say we’re smart when the laws of our land are now being infringed upon? How can we say we’re modernized when the same sky which gave us rain in indigenous times just gives us but storms on our land’s nobility? People are dying, Blanche. Yet we give our young girls out too early to men because we think these men are wealthy enough. Most of our girls are inexperienced to get married. It’s so unfair.

Blanche: You talk too much, Elena. This shows of wisdom and deep thinking but first note this. The greatest gifts could best be grabbed earlier than the latter ones. To me, everything is good! [cackles]

Elena: I have to go now. I am stranded in some sort of myalgia in my arm. See you later. [hugs them both and exists]

Blanche: Did you tell her anything about the convo we had yesterday?

Amberlina: No maman. I said not a single bit of it.

Blanche: Good! You’re my angel Amber, and I know what is just best for you. Don’t listen to anyone but me. Just me, you heard?

Amberlina: Yes Mama. I will always listen to you.
